7 Fisherman from Tamil Nadu has been arrested by the Srilankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters using a banned fishing net, a fisheries department official said.
The incident occurred early with the first light of the morning when the Indian fishermen from Thanjavur district ventured into the sea last night in two country boats, were fishing off Neduntheevu, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Thanjavur district, M. Chinnakuppan said.
The Srilankan Naval personnel first rammed their vessel so as to damaging their boat and arrested seven fishermen for entering into their territory and poaching fish using banned fishing net, he alleged.
The Naval personnel then seized tow of the boats including the heavily damaged boat to Kangesanthurai and anchored it there.
on July 8 four fishermen from Mandapam were arrested by the Lankan Navy for allegedly poaching fish in their territorial waters using banned fishing net.
