NEW DELHI: The chief financial officer of China’s global telecommunications giant Huawei has been arrested in Canada and faces extradition to the United States on suspicion she violated U.S. trade sanctions against Iran.
Meng Wanzhou, also known as Sabrina Meng and Cathy Meng, was apprehended in Vancouver on December 1, according to Canadian Justice Department spokesman Ian McLeod. “As there is a publication ban in effect, we cannot provide any further detail at this time. The ban was sought by Ms. Meng.” he further stated. She was arrested in Vancouver on 1 December, but the news was not made public at her request.
“Huawei is China’s most powerful, most prized company,” said one U.S. lobbyist who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. “She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday.” China on Thursday urged Canada and the US to “clarify” the reason for Meng’s arrest and demanded her release.
