Cyclone Gaja Set To Hit Tamil Nadu Today, Schools To Stay Shut

TAMIL NADU: Cyclone Gaja is predicted to make landfall on Tamil Nadu coast on Thursday evening bringing heavy rainfall to coastal state, a red alert has been issued for the state. Meanwhile the weather department said, prompting authorities to shut schools and colleges in the Cuddalore and Pamban  area.

‘Gaja’ that lay over southwest and adjoining southeast and west central Bay of Bengal is about 550 km north east of Nagapattinam and is very likely to cross coast between Pamban and Cuddalore on Thursday evening or night with a wind speed gusting upto 100 kmph, the Met office said.

Tamil Nadu government said it was ready to tackle any situation and has kept many as 30,500 rescue personnel on standby. Schools and colleges will remain shut in six Tamil Nadu districts. The Eastern Naval Command(ENC) has assumed high degree of readiness to render necessary humanitarian assistance.

The Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar told media that all dams, lakes and rivers channels were being monitored continuously. Cyclone Gaja is expected to make a landfall between Pamban and Cuddalore today.
