Duped over Bitcoins, UP boy threatens to blow up Miami airport

Uttar Pradesh: An 18-year-old boy, who was cheated over Bitcoins investment, was detained by Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad after he threatened to blow up Miami airport in the US, police said. The boy made threat calls in frustration after he did not get the desired response from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the US intelligence agency, which he had approached to lodge a complaint. The boy wanted FBI to help him get his money back from a fraudster who had duped him of USD 1000 by luring him into investing in bitcoins, they said.

The boy has been booked on charges of impersonation and also under Information Technology Act. The police did not arrest the boy since relevant charges did not require arrest, said a police officer.

ATS officials did not disclose the name and address of the boy following his young age and his future. The agency informed that he is a student of class XII and was caught from Jalaun district of UP. “The boy has confessed to the crime during questioning. His computer and mobile phone is being examined,” said UP DGP Om Prakash Singh.

According to UP ATS, recently they got information from National Investigation Agency (NIA) which was contacted by FBI that a person is making calls to Miami airport in the US and threatening to blow it up.

With the help of IP address, the ATS traced the boy and caught him in Jalaun.

“The boy told police that around five months back he had purchased Bitcoins worth USD 1,000 from the money he got from father, who runs an NGO. In the meantime, the boy came in contact with a person during an online chat who cheated him and took all his Bitcoins,” said the officer.

He added the boy did not complain about it to the police and informed FBI. He made calls to FBI control room and also sent e-mail using his fake name. The boy made over 50 calls to the control room of FBI.

“After the boy did not get desired response from FBI, he made a call to Miami Airport in US and threatened to blow it up. He told them over phone that he would be coming to attack with AK-47, grenades and suicide belt and will kill everyone. He asked Airport authority to ask FBI to call him,” said the DGP adding that the boy also said he would be wearing body armour. (bulletproof jacket).

“The FBI responded and spoke to the boy but he continued making threat calls to the Miami Airport using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Five calls were made between October 2 and October 31, added an ATS official.

Later, FBI contacted NIA which approached UP’s ATS for help. The boy was making calls through VoIP and the IP address was traced by the ATS which helped them to catch him in Jalaun.

“It has also come to light that the boy had prepared fake Aadhaar card which he used in contacting FBI to hide his identity. Fake Aadhaar card has been recovered. The boy had also prepared e-mail account under a fake name,” the police added.
