Maharashtra: A government hospital in Maharashtra handed over a body to a 50-year-old patient’s family saying he was dead. But after Avinash Dadasaheb Bagwade’s family brought the body back to their home, they realised that it wasn’t his body. It was later revealed that Avinash Bagwade was alive and was receiving treatment at the hospital. An official representing the hospital authorities said that the matter would be investigated soon. “We will submit a probe report in the next 48 hours and action will be taken against those involved,” Medical Superintendent Dr Subodh Ugane told. The classic mix-up occurred at Sangli civil hospital in Maharashtra. Bagwade was admitted in the hospital for liver ailment.
The hospital also failed to identify the person whose body was handed over to the Bagwade family after conducting the post-mortem. The hospital authorities called the family members on Tuesday and claimed that Bagwade was no more. Some relatives arrived at the hospital and accepted the body, a hospital official said. “However, one relative was not convinced that it was Bagwade’s body. He spoke to the hospital authorities who asked the family to collect the body and leave the premises,” he said.
Many relatives felt that it wasn’t Bagwade’s body while they were on their way back to Tasgaon. After they removed the cloth to check, it was found out that the body was someone else’s. They rushed back to Sangli to find that Avinash was in the hospital and responding to treatment. However, hospital authorities said that nobody has come forward to claim the body yet.
