NEW DELHI: An Indian techie in the US has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman who was seated next to him on a flight. Prabhu Ramamoorthy, living in the US on a temporary work visa hails from Tamil Nadu.
Ramamoorthy, came to the US on a H-1B visa in 2015, will be deported after he serves his sentence, a federal court in Detroit said as it sentenced the Indian national to nine years of imprisonment. The prosecution had originally sought a 11-year jail term, but US District Judge Terrence Berg concluded that nine years was sufficient for what he described as “an extremely serious offence.
According to evidence presented at the trial, Ramamoorthy sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman while on board a flight on January 3. A jury convicted Ramamoorthy in August . He will be deported to India after serving his sentence.
