New Delhi: On being asked about the reasons for increased crime against women in the country, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Madhya Pradesh on Saturday blamed technology. Nand Kumar Chauhan told news agency ANI due to easy access to the smartphones and internet, where they watch obscene content the crime has increased against women. According to Kumar such content has a negative impact on their “innocent minds”.

Kumar said, “I think youngsters these days have easy access to internet and smartphones, they watch obscene content on it, this has a negative impact on their innocent minds.” On July 3, a shocking case from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur was reported, where a 4-year-old minor girl was sexually assaulted by four boys aged between six and 12 years.

The accused were sent to a remand home. As per the police’s speculations, the accused boys planned the assault after watching a porn clip on their phones. The girl was assaulted on June 30 while she was playing outside her house. Last month, another incident from Gujarat’s Kutch was reported where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 16-year-old boy.

A Madhya Pradesh minister in April told ANI the BJP government in the state was mulling to ban porn as, according to them, that is the reason behind the increase in sexual assault on children and women. Bhupendra Singh said, “We think the reasons for the rising number of child rape and molestation cases are porn.”

He said the government was contemplating of banning porn in Madhya Pradesh and they would also reach out to the Centre over the issue.
