NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with Army Chief General Bipin Rawat visited the Balbir forward post in Keran sector and became the first Defence Minister to set foot at the army post in Jammu and Kashmir’s Keran sector that has seen numerous action against infiltrators.

Sitharaman reviewed the security situation in Kashmir during her visit to the valley. Army officials briefed her with the operational preparedness and counter-infiltration grid. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Sunday called on Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik and discussed the prevailing security situation in the state.

The Governor and Defence Minister discussed several important inter-related issues concerning effective management of internal and external security, particularly in the context of increasing attempts at infiltration and the ongoing anti-terrorist operations.

Army officials said, the defence minister visited forward areas in the frontier district of Kupwara. Ms Sitharaman visited Balbir Post where she interacted with the troops of 28 Infantry Division.
Sitharaman technically is the second woman to hold the defence portfolio, but for former prime minister Indira Gandhi, defence was an additional charge. Sitharaman is India’s first full-time woman defence minister.
