PPP Hindu candidate wins a seat from Tharparkar, Sindh creates history

Pakistan: Hindu politician Mahesh Kumar Malani and Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate from Tharparkar, Sindh wins the by poll creating history. It is for the first time that a Hindu candiate win a seat in National Assembly seat.

Malani, the 55-year-old minority community leader, defeated Arab Zakaullah his nearest rival of the Grand Democratic Party in the NA-222 constituency.

He secured 37,245 votes while Zakaullah received 18,323 votes, the Express Tribune reported.

Mahesh Kumar Malani was also the Member of Parliament for a tenure of five years 2003-08 on a reserved seat, nominated by the PPP.

In 2013, Mr Malani became the first non-Muslim Member of the Provincial Assembly after winning the Tharparkar-III general seat of the Sindh Assembly.

The Hindu candidate win a National Assembly seat, 16 years after non-Muslims got the right to vote and contest on general seats in the country. Non-Muslims got the right to vote and contest on general seats of the parliament and provincial assemblies in 2002 .
