Woman set ablaze by alleged attackers to stop her from filing FIR against molestation in UP

LUCKNOW: A woman who was en route to the police department was allegedly set ablaze by two men who sexually harassed her in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur on Sunday. The victim, with over 45% burn injuries has been admitted to a local hospital.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sitapur Madhuvan Singh said the woman had recently filed a police complaint alleging that the man was sexually harassing her. The two accused have been identified as Rajesh and Ramu and one of them has been arrested. She twice tried to file police complaint but was refused.

Superintendent of Police SP Prabhakar Chaudhary said local station officer Om Prakash Saroj was suspended for not acting on the woman’s complaint. On November 29, the woman, who is married, was allegedly molested by brothers Ramu (32) and Rajesh (28)–the police said.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday sent notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state’s police chief over the incident.
